On December 18, 1972, not long after Joe Biden was elected to the U.S. Senate, his first wife, Neilia, was involved in a tragic car accident. She was driving their three children west along Valley Road in Hockessin, Delaware, when their car collided with a northbound tractor-trailer at the intersection with Delaware Route 7 (Limestone Road). Two weeks subsequent to the accident, Joe Biden took his Senate oath in the hospital, alongside his recovering sons.
